Thanks for all the comments guys smile

Utz - yeah I enabled the IO contention in Beepola to try and make the output sound like a 48k speccy. It played at the right speed and had the 48k 'muzziness' but the arps were also not distorted, unlike real hardware - bizarre.

Garvalf - I agree, I think for this engine the +2A output sounds cleaner and is preferable. I still prefer the 48k for Qchan though as it seems to beef up the thin sound a bit.

Cheers

I've emailed the source .bbsong to you smile

Hi Guys

If anyone is interested, I've made a recording from real hardware of Space Beeps (Part 2).

The render on BOTB was made from the Beepola export. I originally tried to make a recording from my Speccy 48K but the arps sounded a bit distorted.

I've had another go tonight and recorded it from my Spectrum 128K +2A which sounds OK.

Even though I recorded it in 48K mode the tune does still play a bit faster (shaved about 5 seconds off the length) but I think it sounds a bit less scratchy.

Not sure which version I prefer as other parts have also subtly changed but it seemed wrong not to record it from real hardware wink

Hmmm 1-bit digital modules?

Seems like a strange addition to me!

I love 1-bit music but digital 1-bit mod-like music on the Speccy 48K just doesn't do it for me.
As a technical exercise to prove it can be done, I think 1-bit digital music is great but I'd much prefer to listen to the exact same tune played in better quality through an AY chip.

Anyway, just my opinion, what do you guys think ? smile

Yes the Vega 1-bit sound is very accuate.

There's the Vega Plus handheld coming out in September too  smile

Like the sound in the example. As you say, a pretty clean sound but still retaining the synth timbre from a pfm engine. Could be a very interesting new engine !  smile

Wow, great release smile

I've always thought the future of beeper was to have lyrics over the top and I've often thought about doing this sort of track myself although probably with vocoder or speech synthesizer. I remember Mister Beep shared with us his idea of singing over Furious Bees a few years ago.

Really like the fact he's used plip plop and phaser 1 for some of the tracks and also like his selection of merchandise.

Great achievement, congrats Tronimal smile

Cheers utz.

BTW, just downloaded the upgraded quattropic package and played the demo tune.

There now seem to be some strange artifacts playing in this version sort of bordering on glitches. Was this intentional ?
I've just played the original demo tune from Aug 2015 just to check it's not the emulator and that still plays fine.

Wow utz !

This is great, love the engine and the border FX smile

BTW, I've just tested the demo-nmos.tap file on different speccy models using Spectaculator and get very different border FX on different models 48K, 128K and 128+2A

The FX on the +2A are brilliant smile

Came across this new ambient album today which I think is great smile
Obviously not 1-bit but definitely worth a listen.

A comprehensive archive of beeper music will be great smile

I agree with utz, there are lots of zx beeper tunes from botb that need including, many really great ones. I've been collecting them for a while now.

What format do you need them submitted in? .ay ?

I think Abrimaal has done work converting beeper tracks to .ay for his own archive so could maybe provide some of the missing tunes ?

Just noticed a very nice track uploaded to Winter Chip on BOTB using the new Phaser 3 engine:

I agree, a great compo with some great new ZX Beeper tunes smile

Garvalf - I thought yours deserved to finish a lot higher, some fine high speed tritone work there.

BTW, my tune 'Space Beeps' actually has an unfinished/unused pattern (9) in the source .bbsong  relevant to the title.
I tried to emulate the Apollo 'Quindar tones' or Space Beeps.  In the end I didn't have time to finish it so I omitted the pattern.

One Life Left played it on their latest show too:

Not working for me I'm afraid utz sad

I'm on Windows 8, 64bit

Just tried the xmtosqueeker.exe and downloaded a .dll it asked for but it still won't start up.
libgcc_s_sjlj-1.dll

Net research also advised to copy this .dll to \windows\SysWOW64
libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll

Just listened to them myself. Some great tunes and everyone using a different engine (I think), just shows the versatility of the ZX Beeper format smile

BTW, as I've never entered this contest before, do we vote on our own tracks (as in our 1-bit forum contest) ?

cheers

Hi utz

I wondered how long it would be before you were itching to write another engine smile

Here are some ideas I have had, if any are of any use or spark debate.

I like the Qchan type engines but if more bass or better drums were possible this would be great. The best part of Qchan (for me) are the volume envelopes as I think this opens the door for interesting synth effects.

I would like to see an engine where different types are selectable from within the tune itself. A sort of multi-engine that can swap between (for example) a phaser sound to a basic rom beep sound to maybe a PFM sound in the middle of a tune. I think this would enable tunes to have sections in different styles and make them more interesting.

A useful feature would be for a tune to quit back to basic at predetermined points in the music (to maybe allow text to be displayed) and then the user could jump back into the tune at the point it left off.

OK, wacky idea. How about a drum and bass engine with basically mega bass and a selection of drums/hihats etc.  Maybe 2 mega bass channels or even just one with digi-drums ????

Just a thought.

Yeah I would have thought it would still be received.

You've got me worried now though smile  I emailed my submission at 1pm and have had no email reply yet. My email address sometimes gets filtered out as SPAM so I've just sent it again using my gmail address to make sure !

I've never entered this compo before so don't know how quickly the organisers get back to you about compo entries.
