Re: upcoming beeper compos

Yep, both of my tracks are Ear Shaver EX, and a few more to come sometime soon. I was trying to explore the possibilities of this particular engine and the potential of the whole engine-per-row approach. It is really promising indeed, although I'm thinking to EX it a bit more.

Totally, the strongest compo in years.

Re: upcoming beeper compos

Congrats utz, excellent track as always.
High quality compo as you guys have said.

I agree about Noise in my head. My favourite, love those drums and delays. I actually thought it was phaser 3 as I’ve heard a phaser 3 track on BOTB with a similar lead sound.

I thought AER’s squat track might’ve been Utz’s at first, again very cool track that I’ll listen to over and over.

I Spent a lot of time on Heartbeat so hoped it would do well.

Yo yo on the other hand, just a few hours but I thought it worth entering as a contrast to the other types of tracks I knew would be entered smile

I might tidy it up a bit for a YouTube release with a suitable mad clubber digitised picture smile

That's insane. Btw, what's "iqm" supposed to be?

Re: upcoming beeper compos

Yeah the 2 values are a bit strange.

I missed out on 2nd spot by a similar margin last time so I'm not complaining big_smile

Re: upcoming beeper compos

I guess that's because there are too few people in the voting - about 50 total (offline/online), and half of them voting at the place, on pieces of paper, and some of them are not really understand what they're doing (people came here with their families), so it is easy to make mistakes.

One problem is that number of votes is different per each entry, some people chose not to vote for particular entries, and authors generally not voting for their own entries. So if I would vote for my own entry, I'd likely get 2nd with that tiny margin, hehe. As for lqm, I don't really know what it is.

That’s good news Shiru.
Not sure I’ll have anything finished in time sad

Re: upcoming beeper compos

No voting results yet, but it is sure a win in the engine diversity category this time. Like, each of the six entries used a different engine, including some of the lesser used. Neat!

Well done on the win utz. Brilliant track again.

I’ve made some yt vids of some of the tracks on my channel as usual

Re: upcoming beeper compos

Cheers guys! Great compo, lovely tracks from y'all. Hearing good old LSengine put a smile on my face.

I'm a bit surprised that Horseman scored comparatively low. I thought it was a very strong entry.

Regarding the samples, what surprised me is that those acid chirps worked so well, as in, they interfere much less with the tone channels than I was expecting. They took surprisingly little memory as well. This gave me an idea for a new engine, actually. How about just two channels of pitchable PWM samples or'ed together? With a bit of extra magic from the PWM encoder it should be quite flexible. As in - make 0 a special value instead of just an end marker - if followed by another 0, loop to the sample start (to enable tones), if followed by 1, stop sample playback, any other value = extend current half-cycle by n-2 samples. The converter should also invert the data if the total number "on" samples is greater than the total number of "off" samples.

Re: upcoming beeper compos

Ooh yeah. Anything with samples gets a thumbs up from me smile

Tbh I never realised the squidgy sounds in your track were samples utz.

Squat seems to play samples really well, in my ‘into the black’ track I didn’t bother to downgrade the quality so the samples were pretty big but the clarity was great

Re: upcoming beeper compos

I was thinking about a Sqeeker-type engine with two pitchable non-interrupting sample channels. At least a couple tone channels wouldn't hurt, and the pitchable samples that can tune in to proper notes should open up a whole new lot of possibilities.

Re: upcoming beeper compos

A dedicated noise channel might also be interesting (with fake volume control through the duty cycle approach, otherwise it will overpower the sample channels), because noise is expensive when PWM sampled.

I'm thinking dedicated tone channels might not even be necessary since they can be "emulated" with PWM samples. Even simple chords should not be too expensive in terms of memory usage. Maybe 3 sample channels can be done instead? Don't know how feasible that would be in terms of overloading. The same applies to additional tone channels, of course. For example, I tried using some longer breakbeat samples in Squat. That almost completely drowned out the tone channels.
