Unfortunately the midi convertor .exe doesn't seem to work on Windows 64bit so I couldn't try it out 
Here are some midi files I was going to have a go at converting if anyone else wants to try (I think some of them could sound pretty good, particularly FOFT)
I like the idea of a 1k size limited category too

I wouldn't have a clue about making a sound engine but it's still very interesting reading the posts
