Topic: The 1-Bit Instrument: New paper on 1-bit music

The 1-Bit Instrument

Check out this excellent new article on 1-bit music, by Protodome. I'd say so far this is the best and most comprehensive one of a small but growing list of academic papers on 1-bit music.

And because theory is dry, we also have https://protodome.bandcamp.com/album/4000ad smile

Re: The 1-Bit Instrument: New paper on 1-bit music

Hey, it's protodome (new account, completely lost my previous details), thanks for sharing. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for helping me out; I've learnt a **huge** amount from lurking in this forum, listening to your music and examining routine code you've shared. Still, what I've written here (and my understanding) is pretty basic/entry-level and there's loads more that could be said; what you guys could write on 1-bit routine building would be absolutely fascinating.

Anyway, thanks again and I hope you enjoyed the album!

Good job blake!

Hi blake !

Didn't know you are here, I was going to send you a message about this forum, we already met in Twitter (I am @jkervinen there), where I compiled your mmml-dekstop-synth smile !!

wow, this album is wonderful!
It's great to discover new avr related projects, even if I like the old speccy music, having a more powerful chip can lead to interesting new effects!

I've tried to flash this on an atmega8 chip, but I can't get any sound...
I've adapted the fuse according to this website: https://www.engbedded.com/fusecalc/ (using 8mhz internal clock), I've connected the audio to PB0 and gnd...

(edit) fixed it, my circuit was underpowered!

Re: The 1-Bit Instrument: New paper on 1-bit music

I've recycled one of my PMD98 tune (FM music written in MML) into 1-bit, thanks to this wonderful MMML tool. Here is a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPUAUxfS40E

Ha, love the snail in the background. Is that your garden? Lovely song too, can't even decide if I like the original or the 1-bit version better.

Re: The 1-Bit Instrument: New paper on 1-bit music

Hey garvalf, this is absolutely awesome! It sounds fantastic!!

I've added your tutorial to the repo; might help others in future.

Re: The 1-Bit Instrument: New paper on 1-bit music

I'm glad someone noticed the snail!
Yes, it's in my garden.

It's definitely different from some more danceable chiptune,  for my next one I'll try to look how to create arps with MML, for this one it was just a simple midi conversion...
